Hot nights, cool bars: Oaklyn Manor Bar
Address: 198 W. Clinton Ave., Oaklyn.
Friday, August 22, 2003
What it's known for: The Oaklyn Manor Bar is the quintessential
neighborhood bar. Patrons are loyal, even when they've left the
area.
"There seems to be a legacy of people who've grown up with (the
Manor Bar) in the neighborhood and move away and still come
back. They have to get that cheesesteak," said owner/manager
Julia Sohanchak Peters.
The menu features traditional pub fare, including
craving-satisfying cheesesteaks and hot roast beef sandwiches.
There's also a mysterious item called the Giordano special.
"There's a story about that one, but they have to come in to
hear it," Peters said. Peters, along with her brother and
sister, took over the bar from her parents, who bought the manor
in 1955.
Ambience: The Manor Bar's homey atmosphere attracts subdivision
dwellers who've tired of Applebee's and T.G.I. Friday's. "It's
something that's missing in a lot of the subdivisions," Peters
said. The cool, dark main room opens to a pleasant patio that's
open during the summer.
On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights the bar attracts a
bustling crowd of hipsters, young and old professionals and
local regulars - a crowd most likely looking for a party that
doesn't require a trip over the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and the
parking hassle of Center City, she said. "When they're on the
move, they go to Philly," Peters said. "But they always settle
back in here." While the bar only occasionally offers live
music,
Peters said, "We have a really great jukebox."
Miscellaneous: According to local and family lore, this cozy
corner bar may be haunted by harmless, but occasionally noisy,
spirits.
South Jersey Paranormal Research offers evidence of paranormal
activity in the bar on its Web site www.sjpr.org.
"I've seen some strange things," said bartender Tim O'Malley. On
the phone once, he said, "I could swear I hear (Julia's)
mother's voice in the background and she passed away back in
'95. She still had a Ukrainian accent and everything."
