Case Studies - Burlington County Prison Museum - Mt. Holly, NJ - 5/31/03

The Burlington County Prison Museum is an historic jewel in South Jersey. Located on High Street in Mt. Holly, it was the oldest prison in continuous use in the United States, having been open for over 150 years. It was designed by architect Robert Mills who also designed the Washington Monument. Many prisons built after the Burlington County Prison were modeled after Mills functional design. The prison was in operation up until the mid-1960's.

South Jersey Paranormal Research conducted an investigation this night, accompanied by a reporter from the Philadelphia Inquirer and the spirits here gave him plenty to write about. We encountered some strong, unhappy souls here; not too surprising given the history of the occupants. At one point in the investigation, we had 2 members pushed by someone unseen. Both investigators were on separate teams and floors of the prison and the incidents took place within 3 minutes of each other. Here is some of the evidence we collected.

Investigator B. Hirschmann captured this moving orb on the massive, wooden front door of the prison. This picture, taken by Investigator Rowand, shows some bright orbs on and around Investigator Farley.

Investigator Weber caught this orb wandering the halls of the prison. Investigator Zarycki took this picture showing a bright, dense orb in the prison's workshop.

Investigator M. Pennock took this picture showing an orb that almost seems to be racing at Investigator "Bait" Rowand. These orbs were captured in the warden's office by Investigator Rowand.
The Burlington County Prison Museum is a living piece of our history and the County has done a fabulous job of preserving the building and completing renovations that will give you a good taste of what life was like for those incarcerated here. Below are a few pictures of the jail to show some of the renovations...it is definitely worth the trip to Mt. Holly to tour this facility yourself.

Shown here is one of the cells with a life-size mannequin showing life in prison during the early 1800's. The prisoner sits on his "bed", which is little more than a burlap sack filled with straw. He had a fireplace as his only source of heat and the bucket shown in the picture was his "night bucket".

This is just another view point of the incarcerated mannequin.
This mannequin has been sentenced to death, so his remaining days are spent chained to a hook in the floor in the death row cell. He will eventually be taken into the prison yard to be hanged by gallows built especially for the event.

We managed to capture some decent evp on this trip to the jail, some of which we consider "interactive", meaning they commented on things what were being said at the time. Some were residual and perhaps words spoken by prisoners who called the jail their home.

While standing at the entrance to the women's wing of the prison, Investigator Bove' was speaking with the newspaper reporter who had accompanied us this night. In the beginning of the clip you will hear Investigator Bove' answering a question...listen to the sassy woman who says, 'You keep him away from my bedroom!' Apparently, she didn't want the reporter near her former cell. Listen

Listen to this amazing evp recorded by Investigator Bove' in the women's wing of the prison. As Investigator Bove' speaks, you will hear a gruff sounding woman say, 'I'm a prisoner', followed by a little giggle. Listen

Recorded by Investigator Weber, listen to the haunting voice of this male spirit say, 'I'm worrying about sickness'. Listen

This is a very clear evp recorded by Investigator Weber, but didn't really make any sense. You will hear a male say, 'We are freaks'. Listen

Below is an awesome video captured by one of our videographers, Investigator Hirschmann.

Watch
In the basement, watch as this orb moves out of the display area across the floor and towards the camera. It almost looks 'worm' like.

The clip is looped two times.
